New World is an upcoming massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG). It is developed by Amazon games studio and is scheduled to release on 31st of August, 2021 on windows platform. The game follows a buy-to-play model meaning that you have to make only a single payment to play the game. New World has the potential to become one of the best MMORPG of 2021.

The game takes place in a fantasy world where we play as an adventurer who gets caught up in a shipwreck and ends up on Aeternum – a supernatural island shaped by magic. Throughout our journey, we will encounter plants, stones, other resources and creatures altered by magic. If lucky enough, one may also come across the relics of the past which unravels the island’s deepest and darkest history, revealing the secret behind the island, its altered inhabitants and environment.

Since the concept of MMORPG has been going on for over two decades and New World being an MMORPG, there exists a multitude of games that are similar to it and they are as follows.

Black Desert Online

Black Desert Online(BDO) is a sandbox oriented Massively multiplayer online role playing game(MMORPG) . It is developed and owned by Korean video game developers at Pearl abyss. It is available on Windows, Android, iOS, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. BDO also follows a buy-to-play model.

What makes this one of the games like New World is its action combat mechanics. BDO, just like New World, has a non-targeted combat system which is completely skill based. Combat in BDO requires you to have quick reaction and precise control over your characters. Black Desert Online has two main PvP wars that are called Node and Siege War where Guilds battle each other in order to gain control of a territory commonly known as Node. The winning side gets control over the area and reaps benefits that come along with it (receiving part of worldwide tax). It is similar to New World’s War involving 50 players on each side fighting in order to gain control over territories and settlements.

There are some mixed reviews from the community regarding whether the game is considered Pay To Win (P2W) or not. Some believe that spending real world currency is rather for convenience whereas others believe that there are a couple of must-have items which require you to pay a certain amount, if you are in mid stage of the game. Overall, BDO is one of the few games like New World with several aspects of the game having similar game mechanics and characteristics. If you like the concept of New World or enjoy playing it, BDO will be a good game to try.

Elder Scrolls Online

Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game developed by ZeniMax Studios and published by bethesda. It was first released in 2014 as a part of the Elder Scrolls series. It is available on windows, maxOS, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Stadia. Until 2015, ESO followed a subscription based model but after that they changed it to buy-to-play model.

The Elder Scrolls Online offers flexibility when it comes to character creation. It allows you to choose your preferred skill set from the start with few limitations. You can experiment with different skill sets and builds. The combat system in ESO is fully manual just like in New World, meaning that whether an attack lands or not is dependent on how good of an aim you have since there is no auto target or tab targeting. ESO also offers similar PvP where groups or factions battle for controlling strongholds that come with related benefits.

Elder Scrolls Online is not a Pay-To-Win (P2W) game because you cannot buy the best weapons and armors. Levels and stats points cannot be bought either. Spending money in a game does improve your quality of life and you spend less time grinding for materials. Overall, Elder Scrolls Online is in good condition with new content getting added regularly.

Neverwinter

Neverwinter is an action adventure Massively Multiplayer Online Multiplayer Game (MMORPG). It is developed by Cryptic Studios and published by Perfect World Entertainment. It is available on Windows, Xbox and PlayStation. Neverwinter follows a free-to-play model.

As with most MMORPGs out there, the gameplay of Neverwinter revolves around your character. It is more story oriented and it has a strong storybase for your character and the quests are based on them. If you like New World and were hoping to find something similar to it but with a bit more depth put into the character and their backstory, then Neverwinter is for you The Combat in this game is more action-oriented which resembles that of a third person shooter. However there are no PvP faction wars in this game, in fact the game has hardly any PvP in it.

Talking about whether the game is playable or not, In this game there are no items or locations that are hidden behind a paywall and each and every item can be obtained without having to spend any money at all (although it does require you to heavily grind for them). If you are into MMORPG games with dense storyline and PvE then you should give Neverwinter a try.

Final Fantasy XIV

Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV) is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) developed and owned by Square Enix – a video game company based in Japan. It is available on Windows, macOS and PlayStation. Final Fantasy XIV follows both a buy-to-play and subscription based model.

The most notable features of FFXIV is that you have 8 races and over 15 classes to build your character from. For a single character, you can level up all the classes. This is quite similar to the new world’s weapon mastery where you don’t have the limitation of having to stick with a single weapon and you can invest points and progress in every one of them. This isn’t really common for games of the MMORPG genre where you can change your path and mix your playstyles instead of having to choose one throughout the entire playthrough.

FFXIV also has an enormous amount of content and you can play the game for thousands of hours. A good thing about this game would be that the main content revolves around a character’s storyline. There are numerous small activities and side quests to keep you engaged. If you don’t feel like following the main storyline or taking a break from it, you could engage in doing these side activities.

Overall, this game is tailored for both casual and hardcore players. Feel like playing the game casually? you can choose to play on easy or normal difficulty, the game isn’t challenging enough ? you can go with savage or ultimate difficulty. This game is more PvE oriented so if you are into it then the game has enough PvE content to make you invested and enjoy while playing. The game is still relevant and active among the MMORPG community.

TERA

The Exiled Realm of Arborea(TERA) is a MMORPG. It is developed by Bluehole Studio. It was first released 2011 on windows and later was available for platforms like PlayStation 4 and XBox One. TERA follows a free-to-play model.

TERA just like other MMORPGs out there features quests, classes, PVP. As per developers, the combat in TERA is Non-Target battle system. What it basically means is that it requires you to aim manually at targets in order to inflict damage while also dodging enemy attacks with your movements. It’s combat mechanics are like that of New Worlds. This game also has a wide range of PvP modes like a 1v1 duel, mass PvP battles in the battlegrounds, deathmatches, battle between guilds and more.

The good thing about TERA is that it gets frequent and continuous updates. During the first half of 2021, the game received a total of six new updates including patches, seasonal updates, new events and contents. If you are into games receiving new contents or updates on a regular basis then you should give this game a try.

To conclude, although the games listed above do share a few similarities with New World, each one of them have a separate way of doing things and have different standings in the MMORPG community. Games like New World that are listed above are certainly worth playing.
